소개
수동태와 법조동사를 결합하면 "무엇이 가능한지, 무엇을 해야 하는지, 무엇이 꼭 이루어져야 하는지"를 누가 하는지 명시하지 않고도 표현할 수 있어요. 아주 강력한 구조예요.
"Applications must be submitted by Friday(지원서는 금요일까지 제출되어야 합니다)"는 "You must submit applications by Friday"보다 더 격식 있게 들려요. 이런 구문은 공식 문서, 규칙, 규정, 지시문에서 특히 많이 쓰여요.
한국어에서는 "-되어야 한다", "-될 수 있다" 같은 피동 표현을 쓰지만, 영어만큼 자주 사용하지는 않아요. 전문적이고 학술적인 영어에서는 조동사+수동태 조합이 정말 빈번하니까, 꼭 익혀둬야 해요.
