소개
법조동사(modal verb)는 능력, 가능성, 허가, 의무를 나타내는 특별한 조동사예요. 주어에 따라 형태가 바뀌지 않고, 뒤에는 항상 동사 원형이 와요.
한국어에서 "-할 수 있다", "-해야 한다"처럼 어미로 표현하는 것을 영어에서는 can, must, should 같은 조동사를 동사 앞에 놓아서 표현해요. 기본 단계에서 꼭 알아야 할 건 "can(할 수 있다)"과 "must(해야 한다)"예요.
이 법조동사를 익히면 단순한 사실 진술을 넘어서 "무엇이 가능한지, 무엇이 허락되는지, 무엇이 필요한지"를 표현할 수 있어요. 문장에 뉘앙스가 생기죠.
