소개

"say"와 "tell"만으로는 부족해요. 영어에는 원래 화자의 태도나 방식을 전달하는 보고 동사가 수십 개나 있거든요. claim, admit, deny, suggest, insist, warn, promise, threaten……아직 더 있어요.

각 동사마다 고유한 문법 패턴이 있고, 적절한 동사를 고르면 전달의 뉘앙스가 크게 달라져요. "She admitted making a mistake"와 "She said she made a mistake"는 느낌이 상당히 다르죠.

한국어에서도 "인정했다", "주장했다", "부인했다"처럼 동사 선택이 중요하듯, 영어에서도 보고 동사의 선택이 간접화법의 수준을 결정해요. 이것들을 마스터하면 간접화법이 확 세련돼질 거예요.
