소개
담화 표지(discourse markers)는 말과 글을 더 높은 수준에서 정리해주는 도구예요. 화제 도입(regarding, as for), 순서 나열(first, finally), 예시(namely, for instance), 요약(in short, to sum up)까지 다양하죠.
가정법(subjunctive)도 격식체 영어의 특징이에요. suggest, demand, insist 뒤에 동사 원형을 쓰는 용법인데, "I suggest that he leave"가 "I suggest that he leaves"보다 훨씬 세련되게 들려요.
한국어에서도 "즉", "먼저", "요약하면" 같은 접속 표현이 있지만, 영어의 담화 표지는 종류가 더 다양하고 체계적이에요. 이런 고급 기능들을 마스터하면, 진정으로 능숙한 영어 사용자로 인정받을 수 있어요.
