Pledging is the initiation period before becoming a full member of a Greek organization. Pledges must prove their commitment through activities, memorizing chapter history, community service, and (controversially) hazing tasks. 'I am pledging Sigma Chi' means you are in the probationary period. The pledge period lasts weeks to months. Pledges are at the bottom of the hierarchy — they clean the house, run errands, and endure whatever the active members devise. Getting 'initiated' at the end is the reward.
