年中行事
Meaning: Annual traditional events and customs — the cycle of festivals, ceremonies, and seasonal observances throughout the Japanese year.
Japan has an extraordinarily rich calendar of annual events, from 正月 (New Year) through 節分 (Setsubun), ひな祭り (Girls' Day), 花見 (cherry blossom viewing), 七夕 (Tanabata), お盆 (Obon), to 大晦日 (New Year's Eve). Even modern Japanese who are not religious tend to observe many of these events out of cultural habit and enjoyment. 年中行事 also extends to workplace events like 忘年会 (year-end party) and 新年会 (New Year party), which some find more obligation than celebration.
