From Old English 'leornian' meaning 'to get knowledge, to study', from Proto-Germanic 'liznōjan'. Related to German 'lernen'. The word 'lore' (accumulated knowledge) comes from the same root. In some dialects, 'learn' was historically used to mean 'teach' as well.
