transpiration
The process by which water vapour is released from the surfaces of a plant, mainly through the stomata of leaves.
Transpiration is the plant equivalent of sweating, playing a crucial role in the water cycle and in the movement of water and minerals through plants. It creates a 'transpiration pull' that draws water up from the roots. Transpiration rates are affected by humidity, temperature, wind, and light intensity. It collocates with 'rate,' 'stream,' 'pull,' and 'loss.'
例文
- Transpiration from a large oak tree can release several hundred litres of water into the atmosphere each day.
- The rate of transpiration increases on hot, dry, windy days when the stomata are open.
- Reducing transpiration loss through waxy cuticles and sunken stomata helps desert plants conserve water.
