torpid
意味: Mentally or physically inactive; sluggish and lacking energy or enthusiasm. In biology, describes a state of dormancy in which bodily functions are slowed.
Torpid conveys a deeper level of inertia than 'lazy' or 'sluggish,' suggesting a near-paralysis of will or vitality. It is used both literally, to describe animals in hibernation, and figuratively, to describe people, institutions, or economies that have stagnated. At Oxford, the 'Torpids' are bumps races for less competitive rowing crews — a characteristically self-deprecating usage.
