topological
Relating to topology, the branch of mathematics concerned with properties of shapes and spaces that are preserved under continuous deformations such as stretching or bending, but not tearing or gluing.
Topology is sometimes called 'rubber-sheet geometry' because it studies what remains unchanged when shapes are deformed without cutting. A coffee mug and a doughnut are topologically equivalent because each has exactly one hole. In computing, network topology describes how nodes are connected. In materials science, topological insulators are a class of quantum materials with remarkable electronic properties. The adjective appears across mathematics, physics, computer science, and geography.
例文
- The researchers discovered a new class of topological insulators that conduct electricity only on their surface while remaining insulating in their interior.
- From a topological perspective, a sphere and a cube are equivalent because one can be continuously deformed into the other without cutting.
- The network's topological structure — a ring configuration rather than a star — provided built-in redundancy against single-point failures.

From Greek topos (place) and logos (study). The term 'topology' was coined in German as Topologie by Johann Benedict Listing in 1847; the English adjective 'topological' followed in the late 19th century.
