stoic
意味: A person who endures pain, hardship, or misfortune without displaying emotion or complaining; as an adjective, calm and uncomplaining in the face of difficulty. In philosophy, relating to the ancient school of Stoicism.
The British 'stiff upper lip' is essentially a stoic ideal — the ability to face adversity without showing distress. Stoicism as a philosophy, founded by Zeno of Citium around 300 BC, teaches that virtue and wisdom come from living in accordance with reason and nature, accepting what cannot be changed. Marcus Aurelius, Seneca, and Epictetus are the most famous Stoic philosophers. Stoicism has enjoyed a major revival in popular culture and self-help, particularly around resilience and mental health.
