recharge
In hydrology, the process by which water percolates through the soil and rock to replenish an underground aquifer, typically from rainfall, snowmelt, or river infiltration.
Aquifer recharge is a critical concept in water resource management. In southern England, the chalk aquifers depend almost entirely on winter rainfall for recharge, since summer rain is largely consumed by evapotranspiration before reaching the water table. Artificial recharge — deliberately channelling water into aquifers — is practised in some regions to supplement supply. Climate change and urbanisation (which increases impermeable surfaces) threaten natural recharge rates. It collocates with 'aquifer,' 'groundwater,' 'natural,' 'artificial,' and 'rate.'
例文
- Below-average winter rainfall meant that aquifer recharge was insufficient, and groundwater levels remained critically low into the spring.
- The water company implemented an artificial recharge scheme, pumping treated river water into the aquifer during periods of surplus.
- Urbanisation reduces natural recharge by replacing permeable soil with concrete and tarmac that shed rainwater into drains.
