quagmire
意味: A soft, boggy area of land that gives way underfoot. Figuratively, a complex or hazardous situation from which it is difficult to extricate oneself.
Quagmire is used at least as often in its figurative sense as its literal one. A political quagmire, a legal quagmire, a diplomatic quagmire — in each case the image is of sinking deeper into difficulty with every attempt to move forward. The word is a staple of foreign policy analysis, where it is frequently applied to military interventions that become protracted and unwinnable. It collocates with 'political,' 'legal,' 'bureaucratic,' and 'diplomatic,' and carries a strong sense of entrapment.
