metastasis
意味: The spread of cancer from the original (primary) site to other parts of the body through the blood or lymphatic system, forming secondary tumours in distant organs.
Metastasis is the process that makes cancer particularly dangerous and difficult to treat. Cancer cells break away from the primary tumour, travel through the bloodstream or lymph vessels, and establish new growths in organs such as the lungs, liver, bones, or brain. The plural is metastases. A cancer that has metastasised is described as metastatic or stage IV, and treatment at this point typically aims to control rather than cure the disease. The term collocates with 'distant,' 'lymph node,' 'bone,' and 'liver.'
