hypertension
意味: Abnormally high blood pressure, typically defined as a sustained reading of 140/90 mmHg or above. A major risk factor for heart disease, stroke, and kidney failure.
Hypertension is often called the 'silent killer' because it rarely produces noticeable symptoms until serious damage has occurred. It affects roughly one in three adults in the UK. Most cases are primary (essential) hypertension with no identifiable cause; a minority are secondary, resulting from an underlying condition such as kidney disease. Treatment involves lifestyle modifications (reducing salt, increasing exercise, limiting alcohol) and medication. The term is distinct from 'tension' in the colloquial stress sense. It collocates with 'arterial,' 'pulmonary,' 'essential,' and 'resistant.'
