groundwater
意味: Water held underground in the soil or in pores and crevices of rock, forming a significant part of the water cycle and a major source of drinking water and irrigation.
Groundwater accumulates in aquifers — permeable rock formations such as chalk and sandstone — and is accessed through boreholes and wells. In England, roughly a third of public water supply comes from groundwater, with the chalk aquifers of southern England being especially important. Over-extraction and contamination from agriculture and industry pose serious threats. The water table — the upper level of groundwater — fluctuates seasonally and is monitored by the Environment Agency. It collocates with 'aquifer,' 'contamination,' 'recharge,' 'abstraction,' and 'table.'
