electroencephalogram
A recording of the electrical activity of the brain, produced by electrodes attached to the scalp, used primarily to diagnose epilepsy, sleep disorders, and other neurological conditions.
Abbreviated to EEG, the electroencephalogram measures voltage fluctuations resulting from ionic current flows within neurons. It is the primary diagnostic tool for epilepsy and is also used to assess brain function in comatose patients, to investigate sleep disorders, and to confirm brain death. The test is non-invasive and painless. Continuous EEG monitoring may be used in intensive care settings to detect subclinical seizures.
例文
- An electroencephalogram was performed to determine whether the patient's episodes of confusion were caused by seizure activity.
- The electroencephalogram showed characteristic spike-and-wave patterns consistent with a diagnosis of epilepsy.
- Continuous electroencephalogram monitoring in the intensive care unit detected subclinical seizures that were not clinically apparent.
