devalue
意味: To reduce the official value of a currency relative to other currencies, or more broadly to diminish the worth, importance, or esteem in which something is held.
Devalue has a specific economic meaning — a deliberate government decision to lower the exchange rate of a national currency, as distinct from depreciation, which occurs through market forces. Harold Wilson's 1967 devaluation of the pound is one of the most famous episodes in British economic history. Figuratively, devalue means to make something seem less important or worthy: 'devalue the contribution of nurses,' 'devalue the meaning of words.' This figurative sense is now at least as common as the economic one.
