confer
意味: To grant or bestow a title, degree, honour, or right upon someone; also, to discuss something in order to reach a decision.
Confer has two distinct senses. In its ceremonial sense, universities confer degrees, monarchs confer knighthoods, and treaties confer rights. In its deliberative sense, colleagues confer before reaching a decision. The first sense takes a direct object ('confer a degree on someone'), while the second is intransitive ('confer with colleagues'). Both senses are formal and appear in academic, legal, and institutional writing.
