atoll
意味: A ring-shaped coral reef or chain of small islands encircling a central lagoon, typically found in tropical oceans.
Atolls form when a volcanic island subsides beneath the ocean surface while the coral reef around it continues to grow upward. Charles Darwin was the first to propose this theory of atoll formation in 1842. Atolls are found predominantly in the Pacific and Indian Oceans, with the Maldives being the most famous atoll nation. Many atolls are extremely low-lying and face existential threats from rising sea levels caused by climate change.
