aesthete
意味: A person with a highly developed appreciation of beauty and the arts, who values aesthetic experience above practical or moral considerations.
Aesthete can be used admiringly (someone of refined taste) or critically (someone who prioritises surface beauty over substance). It is strongly associated with the late-Victorian Aesthetic Movement, whose proponents — Oscar Wilde chief among them — championed 'art for art's sake.' In modern usage, it describes someone with pronounced and perhaps rarefied artistic sensibilities. The British spelling uses -ae-, while American English often simplifies to 'esthete.'
