Defining vs non-defining clauses, whose/where/when
はじめに
関係代名詞には「限定用法」と「非限定用法」の区別があって、これが正確なコミュニケーションにはすごく大事です。限定用法はどの人・物かを特定するもの。非限定用法は追加情報(なくても意味が通る情報)を付け加えるものです。
さらに、所有を表す「whose」、場所の「where」、時の「when」もマスターしましょう。もっと長い表現の代わりに使えるエレガントな言い回しです。
日本語の「〜という人」「〜する場所」とは構造が違うので、最初は戸惑うかもしれません。でもこの区別を理解すると、書く文章がグッと明確になり、複雑な英文も楽に読めるようになりますよ。
