Passive constructions with modal verbs
はじめに
受動態と法助動詞を組み合わせると、「何ができるか・すべきか・しなければならないか」を、誰がやるかを指定せずに表現できる強力な構造が生まれます。
「Applications must be submitted by Friday(申請書は金曜日までに提出されなければなりません)」は、「You must submit applications by Friday」よりフォーマルに聞こえます。こうした構文は、公式の文書、規則、指示書で特に多用されます。
日本語でも「〜されなければならない」という表現はありますが、英語の方がずっと頻繁にこの構造を使います。ビジネスや学術の英語をマスターするには、この法助動詞+受動態の組み合わせは避けて通れません。
