Second and third conditionals for hypothetical situations

はじめに

第二条件文と第三条件文は、英語における「仮定の世界」への入り口です。第二条件文は現在や未来の非現実的な状況を想像し、第三条件文は過去の出来事が違っていたらどうなっていたかを振り返ります。

これらの条件文は、願望、後悔、そして推測を表現するのに欠かせません。日常会話で「もし〜だったら」を語るとき、常に使われています。

日本語の「もし〜だったら」は一つの形で済みますが、英語では仮定の時間軸によって動詞の時制が変わります。この仕組みを理解すれば、「もしも」の世界を正確かつ繊細に語れるようになりますよ。
