Say vs tell and basic reporting
はじめに
間接話法(reported speech)は、誰かが言ったことを別の人に伝える方法です。直接引用(「She said, 'I'm tired'」)ではなく、間接的に伝えます(「She said she was tired」)。
英語学習者がつまずきやすいのが「say」と「tell」の使い分け。「tell」は必ず相手が必要(tell someone)で、「say」は不要(say something)。日本語の「言う」と「伝える」の違いに近いですが、英語ではこの区別がもっと厳格です。
基本的な間接話法のパターンをマスターすれば、会話の中で自然に人の話を伝えられるようになりますよ。
