Say vs tell and basic reporting

はじめに

間接話法（reported speech）は、誰かが言ったことを別の人に伝える方法です。直接引用（「She said, 'I'm tired'」）ではなく、間接的に伝えます（「She said she was tired」）。

英語学習者がつまずきやすいのが「say」と「tell」の使い分け。「tell」は必ず相手が必要（tell someone）で、「say」は不要（say something）。日本語の「言う」と「伝える」の違いに近いですが、英語ではこの区別がもっと厳格です。

基本的な間接話法のパターンをマスターすれば、会話の中で自然に人の話を伝えられるようになりますよ。
