Advanced reporting verbs and their patterns
はじめに
「say」と「tell」だけじゃなく、英語には話し手の態度や話し方を伝える報告動詞がたくさんあります。claim、admit、deny、suggest、insist、warn、promise、threaten……まだまだありますよ。
それぞれの動詞には固有の文法パターンがあって、適切な動詞を選ぶことでニュアンスが大きく変わります。「She admitted making a mistake」は「She said she made a mistake」とはかなり違う印象になりますよね。
日本語の「〜と主張した」「〜を認めた」のように、英語でも動詞の選び方ひとつで報告の質がガラリと変わります。これらをマスターすれば、間接話法が一気にレベルアップしますよ。
