We say evidence 'supports a theory' when it strengthens or confirms it. 'Support' implies the evidence upholds the theory without conclusively proving it. You can also say 'support a hypothesis' or 'support a claim'. Never 'prove a theory' casually — in science, theories are supported, not proved.
