'Suggest' means to put forward an idea for consideration. It's often followed by the subjunctive in formal English ('I suggest he leave') or by '-ing' ('I suggest leaving'). It can also mean to indicate or imply ('The evidence suggests...'). 'Suggest' is softer than 'recommend'.
