Origen e historia
From Old English 'strīcan' meaning 'to stroke' or 'to pass over lightly'. Remarkably, the original meaning was gentle — 'to stroke'. The violent sense of 'hitting' developed later. The labour sense emerged in the 18th century from sailors who 'struck' (lowered) their sails in protest.
