Origen e historia
From Old English 'on gemang' meaning 'in the crowd, in the mingling', from 'gemengan' (to mingle). The word literally meant 'in a mixture' — being mingled in with a group. The 'ge-' prefix was lost, giving Middle English 'among'. 'Amongst' adds a later adverbial '-st' suffix.
