xerophyte
Significado: A plant adapted to survive in dry conditions, possessing structural or physiological features that minimise water loss or maximise water storage.
Xerophytes have evolved a range of adaptations: thick waxy cuticles, reduced or absent leaves, deep root systems, sunken stomata, and succulent water-storing tissues. Cacti are the most familiar examples, but marram grass on British sand dunes is also a xerophyte. The study of xerophytic adaptations is a standard topic in A-level biology, and xeriscaping — landscaping with drought-tolerant plants — has gained popularity as water conservation becomes more important. It collocates with 'adaptation,' 'arid,' 'drought,' 'succulent,' and 'cuticle.'
