tensile
Significado: Relating to tension, or capable of being stretched or drawn out. Tensile strength is the maximum stress a material can withstand while being pulled before breaking.
Tensile strength is one of the most important properties measured in materials science and engineering. It determines whether a material is suitable for applications where it will be subjected to pulling or stretching forces — cables, ropes, structural members, and fasteners all require high tensile strength. The term is contrasted with compressive strength (resistance to being squeezed) and is fundamental vocabulary in mechanical and civil engineering.
Ejemplos
- The tensile strength of the steel cable was tested to ensure it could support the weight of the bridge deck.
- Carbon fibre has an exceptionally high tensile strength relative to its weight, making it ideal for racing cars.
- Engineers must consider both the tensile and compressive properties of materials when designing load-bearing structures.
