serotonin
Significado: A neurotransmitter that contributes to feelings of wellbeing, happiness, and emotional stability, also involved in regulating sleep, appetite, and digestion.
Low serotonin levels are associated with depression, and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are among the most widely prescribed antidepressants. Despite being commonly described as a 'happy chemical,' about 90 per cent of the body's serotonin is found in the gut rather than the brain, where it plays a role in digestion and nausea.
Ejemplos
- SSRIs work by blocking the reabsorption of serotonin in the brain, making more of it available to improve mood.
- Exposure to natural sunlight helps boost serotonin production, which is why people often feel happier in summer.
- The gut produces about 90 per cent of the body's serotonin, highlighting the connection between digestive health and mood.
