precedent
Significado: A previous decision, case, or action that serves as a guide or justification for subsequent similar situations; in law, a ruling that establishes a principle to be followed in future cases.
Legal precedent is fundamental to the common law system used in the UK, where decisions of higher courts are binding on lower courts. The doctrine is known as stare decisis (to stand by things decided). Outside law, the term is used to describe any earlier event that sets a standard, as in 'setting a dangerous precedent.' Common collocations include 'set a precedent,' 'legal precedent,' and 'without precedent.'
