plea
Significado: A formal statement by or on behalf of a defendant in criminal proceedings, indicating whether they admit or deny the charge. Also an urgent or emotional request.
In English criminal law, the defendant enters a plea of guilty or not guilty at the plea and trial preparation hearing. A guilty plea at an early stage typically attracts a sentencing discount of up to one third. Plea bargaining — where the prosecution accepts a guilty plea to a lesser charge — exists in England and Wales but is more restricted than in the American system. Beyond law, 'plea' is widely used in journalism and everyday English to mean an earnest appeal or entreaty. It collocates with 'guilty,' 'not guilty,' 'bargain,' 'entered a,' and 'emotional.'
