pandemic
Significado: An epidemic of infectious disease that has spread across multiple countries or continents, typically affecting a large proportion of the global population.
The World Health Organisation declares a pandemic when a new pathogen spreads worldwide, as occurred with influenza in 1918 and 2009 and with COVID-19 in 2020. Unlike an epidemic, which is geographically contained, a pandemic implies sustained community transmission across international borders. The term can also be used adjectivally, as in 'pandemic influenza' or 'pandemic preparedness.' Figurative use is less common than with 'epidemic.'
