microplastic
Significado: Extremely small pieces of plastic debris, less than five millimetres in diameter, resulting from the breakdown of larger plastic waste or from manufactured products.
Microplastics have been found in virtually every environment on Earth, from the deepest ocean trenches to Arctic ice and human blood. They enter waterways through washing synthetic clothing, degradation of plastic litter, and from personal care products containing microbeads. Their long-term effects on human health and ecosystems are a growing area of research and concern.
Ejemplos
- Microplastics have been detected in tap water, bottled water, and even in human blood samples.
- Washing synthetic fabrics releases thousands of microplastic fibres into the water system with each cycle.
- The UK banned the manufacture of personal care products containing microplastic beads in 2018.
