impressionism
Significado: A 19th-century art movement originating in France, characterised by the use of light, colour, and visible brushstrokes to capture the fleeting impression of a scene rather than precise detail.
Impressionism revolutionised painting by breaking with the precise, finished style of academic art. Key figures include Monet, Renoir, Degas, and Pissarro. The movement takes its name from Monet's painting Impression, Sunrise (1872), which was originally intended as a term of ridicule by a critic. Impressionism also influenced music (Debussy, Ravel) and literature, where it describes writing that captures subjective sensory impressions rather than objective reality.
