gentrification
Significado: The process by which a working-class or run-down urban area is transformed through the arrival of wealthier residents, new businesses, and property renovation, often displacing the original community.
Gentrification is a deeply contested phenomenon. Supporters argue it revitalises neglected areas, reduces crime, and improves services. Critics contend it displaces long-standing communities, erases local culture, and drives up housing costs. London neighbourhoods such as Brixton, Hackney, and Peckham are frequently cited as examples. The term was coined by the British sociologist Ruth Glass in 1964 to describe changes she observed in inner London.
