floodplain
Significado: A flat area of land adjacent to a river that is subject to periodic flooding when the river overflows its banks.
Floodplains are naturally fertile areas formed by the deposition of sediment during floods. They have historically attracted settlement and agriculture, but building on floodplains carries significant risk. In Britain, floodplain management has become a major planning concern as climate change increases the frequency and severity of flooding. The Environment Agency maps floodplain areas and issues guidance on development restrictions.
