electrocardiogram
Significado: A recording of the electrical activity of the heart over a period of time, produced by electrodes placed on the skin, used to detect heart rhythm abnormalities, heart attacks, and other cardiac conditions.
Commonly abbreviated to ECG (or EKG in American usage), the electrocardiogram is one of the most widely performed diagnostic tests in medicine. A standard 12-lead ECG provides a comprehensive view of the heart's electrical activity from multiple angles. It is routinely used in emergency departments, pre-operative assessments, and cardiology clinics. Continuous ECG monitoring (telemetry) is standard in intensive care and coronary care units.
Ejemplos
- The electrocardiogram detected an irregular heart rhythm that required further investigation.
- A twelve-lead electrocardiogram confirmed changes consistent with an acute myocardial infarction.
- All patients admitted to the coronary care unit are placed on continuous electrocardiogram monitoring.
