deism
Significado: The belief that God created the universe but does not intervene in its workings, rejecting supernatural revelation in favour of reason and observation of the natural world.
Deism was particularly influential during the Enlightenment, when thinkers such as Voltaire, Thomas Paine, and many of the American Founding Fathers embraced it. Deists accept the existence of a creator but reject miracles, prophecy, and organised religion. The metaphor of God as a 'divine watchmaker' who set the universe in motion and then stepped back is closely associated with deism.
