Covert is the opposite of 'overt' and is most commonly associated with intelligence, military, and security operations. A 'covert operation' is one conducted in secret. It can also describe subtler forms of hidden behaviour: covert racism, covert hostility, covert surveillance. In British English, the stress typically falls on the first syllable (CUV-ert). As a noun, a covert is a shelter or hiding place, especially for game birds. Common collocations include 'covert operation,' 'covert surveillance,' 'covert action,' and 'covert hostility.'
