biomass
Significado: Organic matter derived from living or recently living organisms, used as a fuel source or in industrial production.
Biomass energy comes from burning wood, agricultural residues, or purpose-grown energy crops. In ecology, biomass also refers to the total mass of organisms in a given area. While biomass energy is classified as renewable, its sustainability is debated because burning it still releases carbon dioxide, and sourcing it can drive deforestation.
Ejemplos
- The power station was converted from coal to biomass, burning wood pellets imported from North America.
- The total biomass of insects on Earth far exceeds that of all other terrestrial animal groups combined.
- Critics argue that burning biomass for energy is not truly carbon-neutral if forests take decades to regrow.
