bioaccumulation
Significado: The gradual build-up of a chemical substance in the tissues of a living organism over time, occurring when the rate of intake exceeds the organism's ability to metabolise or excrete it.
Bioaccumulation is a central concept in environmental toxicology. Persistent organic pollutants such as DDT, mercury, and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are classic bioaccumulators. Organisms at the bottom of the food chain absorb small quantities, but concentrations increase at each trophic level — a related process called biomagnification. The distinction between the two is important: bioaccumulation refers to an individual organism, while biomagnification describes the amplification across the food chain. It collocates with 'mercury,' 'persistent pollutants,' 'tissue,' and 'food chain.'
