autism
Significado: A neurodevelopmental condition characterised by differences in social communication and interaction, alongside restricted or repetitive patterns of behaviour and interests.
Autism is now understood as a spectrum, meaning it presents very differently from person to person. The current clinical term is Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), though many autistic people prefer identity-first language ('autistic person' rather than 'person with autism'). Awareness and understanding of autism have increased dramatically, with a growing neurodiversity movement that frames autism as a natural variation rather than a disorder to be cured.
