antibiotic
Significado: A type of medicine that kills or inhibits the growth of bacteria, used to treat bacterial infections. Antibiotics do not work against viral infections.
Antibiotics revolutionised medicine in the 20th century, making previously fatal infections treatable. However, the overuse and misuse of antibiotics has led to antibiotic resistance — bacteria evolving to survive drugs that once killed them. MRSA and other 'superbugs' are resistant to multiple antibiotics. The terms 'antimicrobial resistance' (AMR) and 'antibiotic stewardship' (responsible prescribing) are increasingly common in public health discussions.
