anemometer
Significado: An instrument used to measure the speed or force of wind, commonly found at weather stations and on ships.
The most recognisable type of anemometer is the cup anemometer, with three or four small hollow hemispheres mounted on a vertical shaft that rotates in the wind. Other types include vane anemometers and ultrasonic anemometers. The instrument is essential in meteorology, aviation, sailing, and the wind energy industry, where accurate wind speed data determines turbine placement and energy output. Anemometers are also used in construction to assess whether conditions are safe for crane operations.
Ejemplos
- The anemometer at the coastal weather station recorded gusts exceeding ninety miles per hour during the storm.
- Wind farm developers installed anemometers at the proposed site to gather twelve months of wind speed data.
- The ship's anemometer confirmed that conditions were too dangerous for the helicopter to land on deck.

Origen e historia
From Greek anemos (wind) + metron (measure). The first mechanical anemometer was invented by Leon Battista Alberti around 1450, though the modern cup design was developed by John Thomas Romney Robinson in 1846.
