amputation
Significado: The surgical removal of a limb or other body part, usually performed to prevent the spread of disease or to treat severe injury.
Amputation may be elective (planned, as in cases of gangrene or cancer) or emergency (following traumatic injury). The term is also used figuratively, though rarely, to describe the drastic removal of something. Collocations include 'below-knee amputation,' 'traumatic amputation,' and 'amputation site.' Phantom limb pain, the sensation of feeling the missing limb, is a well-documented phenomenon following amputation.
