AirDrop (エアドロップ) is Apple's proximity-based wireless file transfer protocol. In Japan, it is widely used among iPhone users to quickly share photos after events or meetings. However, AirDrop gained a very specific cultural notoriety in Japan for わいせつAirDrop (indecent AirDrop) — the practice of sending unsolicited explicit images to strangers on trains and subways when their AirDrop was set to 'Everyone.' This became enough of a social problem that Apple changed the default AirDrop setting to 'Contacts Only' in iOS 16, and Japanese media covered it extensively.
